Norfolk Southern Corporation with the cooperation of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum at Chattanooga inaugurated its 21st Century Steam program on September 3, 2011. “This is the right time for steam to ride the Norfolk Southern rails,” said CEO Wick Moorman. “We have a fascinating history, and we have a compelling message about how today’s railroads support jobs, competition, and the economy. It is a forward-looking message that resonates with people everywhere.” The first 2011 run with no. 630 was in Chattanooga, where the Southern inaugurated its steam program in 1966 with locomotive 4501. Photographer John Gruber was there for both events.
