The painting was made in 2008 and depicts steam-era operations on the Rio Grande's narrow gauge system. It was inspired by a trip to Chama to visit and ride the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad.

Creator Description David Tutwiler began painting at age 14 and earned an Associates Degree in Fine Art from the American Academy of Art. David focuses on steam era railroad subjects, as well as traditional American landscapes and coastal subjects. His work can be found in the collections of the Pepsi Cola Co., the National Railway Historical Society, the Sloan Collection of Vaparaiso University, and the private collection of George Lucas. He maintains studios in Beverly Shores, Indiana, and Rockport, Massachusetts, along with his wife Liné, who is also an artist. They have six children.
