Locomotive engineer Tom Farence made this view of brakeman Jerry Cherney just east of Hartland, Wisconsin, on the Milwaukee Road mainline. The train was stopped because of an emergency brake application, such as an abrupt stop caused by a broken brake line. Cherney has a surprisingly calm expression, considering he will have to walk the train to look for the cause of the emergency application. Cherney started his Milwaukee Road career on the Racine and Southwestern Division and spent his last Milwaukee Road years working the "extra board" on the LaCrosse Division. The photo was rejected by RailPictures.net for "poor aesthetic quality," but it fits well with the Center's themes of railroaders photographing railroaders of providing the public with information about railroading generally.
