With fedora in place, pipe and overnight satchel in hand, Dan Murray, a Milwaukee Road conductor at Malden, Washington, waits for incoming train #262. This is possibly the photographer’s finest portrait. Richard Steinheimer openly sought the camaraderie and friendship of railroaders he encountered; he was accustomed to making some type of picture of almost every worker he came in contact with—and routinely gave prints away as an act of gratitude. It was not uncommon to see his photographs on depot office walls across the West.
