Locomotives in the roundhouse at Chicago & North Western's Proviso Yard, 1942 (editor's title)

C&NW roundhouse interior
Interior view of the Chicago & North Western Railway roundhouse at Proviso Yard in Chicago, Illinois, December 1942. The locomotive in the foreground is #2070, an M-1 class 0-6-0 used for yard switching and built by Alco-Schenectady in 1916. It was scrapped on February 17, 1947. Beside it is a larger freight locomotive, class Z 2-8-0 #1756, which was also built by Alco-Schenectady and operated from 1910 until it was scrapped on October 17, 1944. The farthest locomotive appears to be another switcher. For similar, later views inside roundhouses, see record 1519 and record 1597.

Creator Description Jack Delano had careers as both a photographer for the Farm Security Administration, beginning in 1942, and a composer of music, who grew up on Puerto Rican folk songs. Born in Russia, he came to the U.S. in 1923. He graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1932, and got a job with the Farm Security Administration because of an impressive photographic project about mining conditions in the Pennsylvania anthracite area. As part of an FSA project he visited Puerto Rico and settled there in 1946. He photographed railroads extensively for the FSA and its successor, the Office of War Information.
