Canadian Pacific double-headed steam locomotives and freight train, Lennoxville, Quebec, January 20, 1954

CP 2-8-2s double-heading
The –20ºF morning air of Lennoxville, Quebec, is filled with the sight and sound of two smoke-belching Canadian Pacific steam locomotives approaching the St. Francis River bridge as they head east through the Eastern Townships of the La Belle Province with a heavy train of prairie grain bound for Saint John, New Brunswick. This image is one of the photographer’s favorites. (Text copyright Jim Shaughnessy and Jeff Brouws from The Call of Trains: Railroad Photographs by Jim Shaughnessy, W. W. Norton, 2008)

Creator Description Jim Shaughnessy began photographing steam locomotives in his hometown of Troy, New York, in 1946. Over the next decade-and-a-half he made numerous trips in pursuit of steam throughout the eastern United States, the far West, the Canadian provinces, and Mexico. He would go on to document the dramatic steam-to-diesel transition, capturing the trains, depots, workers, roundhouses, and back shops that made up the American railroad landscape. In later decades he faithfully recorded the changing fortunes of railroading in the Northeast as merger and contraction affected the industry. He is still actively photographing the railroad scene in 2008. His six-decade long career has made an important, lasting contribution to the aesthetic development of railroad photography in America in the latter half of the twentieth century.
