In 1974, John Fasulo produced two signature images in his career as a railroad photographer, both of them featuring Kevin McGarvey (1949-2008). He returned in 2005, little more than 32 years later, and photographed McGarvey again, this time in the cab of an old Alco diesel locomotive. McGarvey was then the chief mechanical officer for the railroad. In the earlier picture
, McGarvey wears the engineer's clothing expected on steam excursions: caps, bibs, and gloves, spiced by authentic grease. In the second, taken in a diesel cab, McGarvey wears contemporary clothing, as modern engineers do; his eyes are well shielded by heavy glasses, and he's portlier and wiser-looking. But the grins are the same. The image appears in "My Passion for Trains: Railroad Images of John Fasulo" at Steamtown in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 2008.
