Washing J Class 605, Shaffer's Crossing, Roanoke, Virginia

Washing N&W #605
This is one of Winston Link’s best known photos, and also one of the very earliest in the N&W series. Here, Wilfred Jones, Jr. gives the locomotive’s running gear a little extra blast of cleaning solution, steam and hot water mixed with a little kerosene, which helped to give the locomotives a nice luster. This atmospheric photo was lighted with a single flashbulb, one of Link’s easiest lighting setups.
