View From a Dome Car on the California Zephyr (editor's title)

View from the dome car
View looking out of a dome car on the Chicago-Oakland California Zephyr, circa 1950. The train featured dome cars offering stunning vistas of the western mountain scenery. It entered service in 1949 as a joint operation between the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy; the Denver & Rio Grande Western; and the Western Pacific Railroads. Schedules were timed for optimal scenery-viewing. Amtrak's California Zephyr now runs over this route. This photo appears on p. 297 of More Classic Trains by Arthur Dubin (Kalmbach, 1974).
