Pullman Standard label on Southern Railway freight car (editor's title)

Pullman Standard builder's label on the side of a former Southern Railway boxcar at the transfer yard in Opelika, Alabama, on December 9, 2009. Best known of its luxurious passenger cars built near Chicago, Pullman Standard also built more than 100,000 freight cars, including this boxcar from 1975 at its sprawling plant in Bessemer, Alabama. Pullman sold the Bessemer works to Trinity Industries in 1984.

Creator Description Frank Orona grew up in Calera, Alabama. His fathered worked for Abex Manufacturing (later ABC Rail), a maker of railroad track components and wheels. Both of his grandfathers worked for the Colorado Fuel & Iron mill making rail in Pueblo, Colorado. Orona has degrees in mechanical and materials engineering from Auburn Unversity, and he currently works in quality control for Kia Motors.
