Abandoned CSX yard office in St. Albans, West Virginia, on August 4, 2010. Buildings of a residential neighborhood are visible in the background at right. The yard office is located in the middle of a wye where a single-track branchline (foreground) into the southern West Virginia coalfields joins the double-track mainline (background at left) between Newport News, Virginia, and Cincinnati, Ohio. Both routes are former Chesapeake & Ohio lines. St. Albans once served as a base of operations for trains and crews operating on the branchline in the coal fields. Modern operations, including longer crew districts and the expanded use of taxis to take crews to and from their trains, have rendered the office obsolete.
