Wisconsonian Returns to the Rails After 40-year Hiatus

Amtrak train arriving behind passenger Jack Holzhueter, preparing to board at Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.
Jack Holzhueter of Mazomanie, Wisconsin, prepares to board Amtrak train no. 7, the westbound Empire Builder, which is arriving behind him on the Canadian Pacific mainline in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, on the afternoon of April 29, 2010. From the 1940s into the 1960s, Holzhueter frequently rode passenger trains on the Chicago & North Western. While he has more recently traveled by train in Europe and the Northeast Corridor, this was the first time he had boarded a passenger train in his home state since the creation of Amtrak in 1971--not an unusual tale. He had, however, ridden Wisconsin's special circus train in 1985 and 2000. And, he wants to take Amtrak from Wisconsin again soon.
