American-built Steam Locomotives in Greece (editor's title)

Two American-built steam locomotives in Aminteon, Greece
Two American-built steam locomotives at the Hellenic State Railway engine terminal in Aminteon, Greece. The 2-8-0 engines were built by Baldwin in 1944 for the U.S. Army Transportation Corps (USATC), whose Military Railway Service was in charge of railway operations in Europe and Northern Africa during World War II. The 2-8-0 was the most popular wheel arrangement for steam locomotives, and the USATC received a total of 2,120, which it classified as the S160 design. 27 of these engines went to Greece in 1947 to help rebuild the state railway system, and Italy sold 25 additional engines to Greece in 1959. Both of the locomotives pictured here, nos. 583 and 587, came in the second batch from Italy. For a view of no. 583 in action, see record 2459.
