Creator Description Jack Delano (1914-97) worked as a photographer for the Farm Security Administration and the Office of War Information from 1940 to 1943. Born in present-day Ukraine, his family immigrated to the U.S. in 1923. He studied music at the Settlement Music School, Philadelphia, and illustration at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, from which he graduated in 1932. A photographic project about mining conditions in the Pennsylvania anthracite area carried out under the Federal Arts Project so impressed photographer Paul Strand that he recommended Delano for the FSA job. He photographed railroads extensively for the FSA and its successor, the Office of War Information. He worked particularly in Chicago, then traveling to the Pacific Coast, often using color--a new medium at the time. He concentrated on showing how the railroad industry worked and on the people who did the work. As part of another FSA assignment he visited Puerto Rico where he settled permanently a few years later in 1946. He became an important and influential figure in the development of film, television, music composition and graphic arts on the island.
Comments Many of Delano's railroad images were later published in James E. Valle's "The Iron Horse at War" (1977).
