The Crescent Stopping in Alabama (editor's title)

Crescent stopping in Alabama
The Crescent Limited, running on the Western Railway of Alabama, slowing to stop before crossing the Central of Georgia in Opelika, Alabama at 11:30 a.m. on July 12, 1952. Among the many advantages of diesel locomotives was a reduced need for service stops. The waterplug in the foreground, used to replenish steam locomotive tenders, was not needed by this diesel powered train. Locomotive #503 was built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division, the largest supplier of diesels in the postwar market.

Creator Description J. Parker Lamb began taking photos as an eleventh grader in the fall of 1949. Born in Alabama, he photographed railroads throughout the South in the early 1950s during the steam to diesel transition and continued photographing the transition era on several Midwestern roads in the mid-1950s while he was assigned to Dayton, Ohio as an Air Force officer. He also documented the early diesel era in Illinois and North Carolina. Lamb served a 38-year tenure at the University of Texas-Austin's school of engineering, where he continued photographing and writing about railroads. His work has appeared in a variety of railroad publications, and he authored three books, including Steel Wheels Rolling, a collection of his finest photography. In 1991, the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society honored Lamb with its lifetime achievement award in photography.
