Title: Stored
Alternate Title: Empty Well Cars Stored on in North Dakota (editor's title)
Creator: Ableidinger, Lewis
Description: Empty well cars, used to carry double-stacked shipping containers, stored on the Red River Valley and Western Railroad west of Carrington, North Dakota, on August 19, 2009. Railroads face a difficult challenge of maintaining the proper amount of cars to handle their traffic. During peak times, there are sometimes shortages of equipment, while excess cars go into storage during slow periods. Unused sidings and even entire lines can be used to store cuts of unneeded cars, which can sometimes stretch for miles. The economic downturn of 2008 sent literally thousands of miles of cars into storage. The photographer estimated one to two miles of stored well cars on this line at the time of the photo, along with another half mile of stored centerbeam cars (specialized flatcars used in hauling lumber).
